While pushing the “Affordable Care Act” (Obamacare) through Congress in 2010, President Obama promised that federal tax dollars would not be used to pay for abortions. This promise has proven to be false, as pro-lifers warned at the time. Reversing long-standing federal policy, Obamacare is poised to use your tax dollars to pay for abortions in two ways:
- Many of those who enroll in Obamacare exchanges will receive federal subsidies to help pay for their premiums. Most of the insurance plans on the exchanges pay for abortions. You will be helping to pay for abortions with your federal taxes even if you live in a state that has banned state funds from subsidizing abortions.
- If you enroll in a health plan through Obamacare, it is very difficult to determine if a plan does or does not cover abortions. If the plan you end up buying covers abortions, some of the monthly premiums you pay will go into a separate fund which will pay for other enrollees’ abortions. The insurance company is not allowed to answer a concerned purchaser’s questions as to whether the plan covers abortions (except when it lists all services at the time he or she is already enrolling in the plan). And it may not reveal how much of the person’s premium goes into the separate abortion fund.
Bills have been introduced in Congress to address these problems. Please contact your member of the U.S. House of Representatives and urge him or her to vote for the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” (H.R. 7) and the “Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act” (H.R. 3279). A 2009 poll (when Obamacare was being debated) showed that most Americans, particularly most women, do not want abortion coverage in their health plans.
Meanwhile, legal challenges to the HHS mandate (which requires nearly all employers — even pro-life and religiously-affiliated organizations — and individuals to cover abortion-inducing drugs, birth control and sterilizations in their health plans) are making their way through the courts.
