Washington, DC, May 16, 2016 — In a unanimous order, the U.S. Supreme Court, in the HHS mandate case (Zubik v. Burwell), vacated the lower court rulings. According to Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life, the Court has “offered the parties an opportunity to work out a mutually acceptable solution in the lower courts, that will both allow the government to pursue its objectives and allow us to practice our faith.” For details, see: priestsforlife.org. The mandate would have forced Priests for Life, the Little Sisters of the Poor, the 35 other petitioners and any other similar groups to include abortifacients, contraceptives and sterilizations in employee health plans or face unreasonably excessive, crippling fines. This case shows the great importance of this election because the next President and Senate will determine the make-up of the Court for decades.
